The introduction can make or break an IELTS essay. To write a great introduction, you need to know what is expected.

There are three parts to an introduction for all essays:

1. General background statement
2. Sentence(s) narrowing towards your thesis statement
3. Thesis statement

An introduction starts quite general and then get more specific.

In an IELTS essay, the length is short. So 1, 2 and 3 can be one to two sentences each.

Here’s an example introduction from www.ielts-blog.com for the topic “As computers are being used more and more in education, there will be soon no role for teachers in the classroom.”:

There have been immense advances in technology in most aspects of people’s lives, especially in the field of education. Nowadays, an increasing number of students rely on computers for research and to produce a perfect paper for school purposes. Others have decided to leave the original way of learning and to get knowledge through online schools. These changes in the learning process have brought a special concern regarding the possible decrease of importance of teachers in the classroom.

Notice how the 1, 2, 3 pattern is followed exactly.

If you have any questions, post a comment below and I’ll do my best to answer!

Very common mistake! Here’s the rule:

The person with the reaction

interested
excited
bored
etc…

The thing or event causing the reaction
interesting
exciting
boring
etc…

So, you should say “I am interested in the television program,” or “The television program is interesting.”
